“Do not fret (upset, worried, angry) because of evildoers, nor be envious of the evil workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret (upset, worried, angry) because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret (upset, worried, angry) it only causes harm.” Psalm 37:1-8. It causes harm to you physically and spiritually and not to others. God does not want you to be harmed and He does not plan your being hurt, but most of the time, we are hurt because of our personal desires and the frustrations we suffer when they are not fulfilled.

Your desires can make you happy, or sad, or envious, or fearful, or suspicious of all others, and your environment. It can reshape your life in ways that are far beyond your ability to control the result thereafter. Desires can drive you into a relationship you will regret, a profession that is wrong for your faith, a location that limits your God-given potential and harm your future as planned by God for your life. Those are some reasons we should be diligent with our desires in life irrespective of their significance. Through desires, Eve disobeyed the commands of God and ignored the warning, agreeing with Satan and lead Adam on the same path; “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.” Genesis 3:6-7. It is true that their eyes were open, they became wise in their own eyes and had understanding; it is also true that they lost the place God gave to them in the beginning forever as a result. They also incurred God’s wrath and changed lifestyle because of that single desire.

“To the woman He said, I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain, you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you. And to Adam He said because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, you shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain, you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust, you shall return. Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man.” Genesis 3:16-19; 23-24

Watch your desires, place them on the table of the word of God, weigh them with the commands of the Lord, pray over them with a heart fixed on God and on pleasing Him. Desires begin from the heart, then it becomes a deep feeling, a strong need, and a pressing want if the heart is not controlled by the word and teachings of Christ Jesus in the Scriptures. Self or the flesh has the power to control our desires, but when our bodies are submitted in obedience to the word of God, then we will be able to control the desires of our hearts. Do not desire anything that is contrary to God’s word and command irrespective of its immediate benefit to you directly. Desire to trust in the Lord and in His word at all times, desire to submit yourself, your emotions, your feelings, your personality, your knowledge, and everything in you to Him and to follow His word. Desire to do good according to God’s word and be faithful, desire to be patient with yourself and with others around you. God has His plans for you and all will be fulfilled. For prayers, Click here
