“I the Lord search the heart; I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” Jeremiah 17:10. When God gives you a gift or a talent, He will also make ways, give you opportunities to benefit as you do your very best to develop them, stay focused on Him, put your heart in His word, and on those gifts and talents. He will open up the needed doors at the right time and in the right place irrespective of the number and strength of the evil forces on the other side warring to stop you from benefiting from those gifts and talents. He will give you opportunities even in places you never think will ever be possible because of your physical situation, your current location, or the people you know. While David’s’ heart was fixed on pleasing the Lord, he was actively using his gifts and talents when no one took note of his exceptional performance in the forest. God looked and saw his heart and recommended him, saw his gifts and talents being developed, and made a way for him to start benefiting in them.

The first thing God saw in David was his prepared and focused heart not talents or gifts; in the recommendation concerning David, God informed Samuel about David’s heart not his gifts, or his talents, or his physical strength. God looks at the heart and will always have a good reason to give His recommendation. When God recommended David to be anointed by Samuel, He gave Samuel a reason for His action with a word of promise that will never be taken from Him. David was not just anointed by Samuel; he was recommended to be anointed for a divine purpose, to be anointed the king after Saul even when Saul was still strong in power and not willing to give up the throne for any reason. What were you anointed to become? Anointing from God will always bring a transformation and elevation in ways that are beyond imagination. God will not allow you to be wasted or His gifts and talents in you to remain unused. He will give you the needed recommendations and will make a way for you.

David gave us a glimpse of his lifestyle, his character, and his desire before the recommendation from God and after in these words; “Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity. I have also trusted in the Lord; I shall not slip. Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my mind and my heart. For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes, and I have walked in Your truth. I have not sat with idolatrous mortals, nor will I go in with hypocrites. I have hated the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked. I will wash my hands in innocence; so I will go about Your altar, O Lord, that I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all Your wondrous works. Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. Do not gather my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men, in whose hands is a sinister scheme, and whose right hand is full of bribes. But as for me, I will walk in my integrity; redeem me and be merciful to me. My foot stands in an even place; in the congregations, I will bless the Lord.” Psalm 26:1-12.

David used the word I several times in the passage above; showed his commitment in keeping his heart focused on the Lord; showed his desire to keep his ways pure before the Lord, and he showed his plans for the future despite all the odds that would stand up against him. Remember, David was not from the linage that produces kings in Israel, but God was willing to make him one through the recommendation for the anointing to command Samuel. Strong determination, strong efforts in keeping goodly decisions before God cannot be overlooked and God will not in any way fail to respond adequately. To David, it was commitment to God before request, not request with a promise of commitment which we make today. God will definitely make a way for you even when you have been abandoned and forgotten in the wilderness when your heart is fixed and focused on Him. “I am doing something brand new, and unheard of. I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19. For prayers, Click here
