“There was a man named Jabez who was more honorable than any of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because his birth had been so painful. He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory. Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain. And God granted him his request.” 1 Chronicles 4:9-10

Please never hold anything against yourself and your blessings; do not stand against your having favorable changes. Never hold yourself back because of what had passed, what is happening and what will happen hereafter. Never give reasons why you are not qualified, why you deserve the worst and why you do not deserve to be restored and made to start running again. Do not give reasons why things can never be better for you; why you will not be out of debt, loneliness, singlehood and bitterness; why you will never have children and a husband. Despite the picture you see of yourself and that which the economy and people are making of you, God is able to give you a new life, to change things for the best and to keep you above the things that had been preventing you from rising up according to His love and words for your life.

When you look back into your past or the present, you will see your struggles to break even, see your pains of failures, disappointments after assurances; see fears of being dumped after walking together with someone for years, see your frustrations of having to make personal amendments always, your tears of missing good opportunities, your hopelessness of what you will become in life, what will become of your education, what will become of your marriage, what your children will become, and see your several rejections. Looking back, you may see a picture that makes you angry; a picture that condemns you, a picture that hurts your dreams and desires; a picture that people deliberately bring up to cause your downfall and destruction; you will the picture that your parents had also made of you ignorantly or deliberately just to limit your life in a way that will harm the rest of your life and your chances in the future.

Those were the kind of pictures that Jabez saw of himself that faithful day of decision, when he looked backward to the day and time of his birth, to all the circumstances that surrounded his family and his parent’s frustrations on seeing him at birth; he saw the pains and anger that befell his siblings; when he looked inward to the meaning of the name that was given to him, he saw anger and rejection; when he looked into what had been going on since the day he was born, he saw hopelessness and limitations, he saw great lack of meaningful opportunities and motivation, he saw a picture of being scheduled to fail be reason of his name; he saw the anger of his parents vented on him for doing nothing wrong and for being brought into the world by them; he saw parental rejection, family sadness and frustrations, he saw the lack of parental courage and lack of encouragement, he saw impossibilities written all over him; but despite what he saw, that did not stop him from looking further into a brighter and better future for himself.

When Jabez looked into his future despite all that he was told by friends and his parents and what he saw and knew of his past, he saw something different; he saw a better person, saw a happy man, a successful man, a good husband and hopeful father; he saw an acceptable, honorable and respected citizen; a saw a rich man; he saw himself owning and controlling large estates, saw a healthy man, saw himself greater than his siblings and his parents; saw himself as a man destined to affect and change his generation positively for the best; he saw a leader, he saw himself being victorious instead of being a victim. He saw hope, joy, opportunities, and he saw God beckoning on him to make a quick decision, he saw opportunity to forsake and to change his past, he saw opportunity to embrace a new life; after comparing the past with the future, Jabez must have concluded in prayers; it is proper and better that he be blessed; and the scripture confirmed that God heard his prayer and blessed him.
